about

When Brian Walker Talbot (The Hobo-Style) first brought me this tune, it was, initially, just to sing on it. Then he asked if I would mind recording it and I thought, cool! So I put together a rough sound skeleton for us to start working off...in my head, thinking....okay....this is a Hobo-Style tune that I'm producing/guesting on so....here we go. When he came into my studio space and heard what I'd done I could tell that he was both impressed at how much I had already tracked but also....not 100% loving it....but too polite to say so. Haha. Then...after we tracked his guitar and some vocals...he said those magic words every producer lovvvvvves to hear: "I just want you to do YOU." *insert hallelujah hands here* So I went back in and did just that...except I like to think that I did "we"....combining the best of both of our vibes and sounds into one deliciously melancholy holiday tune. I mean...who doesn't love a good break up song at Christmas...

This song appears on Brian's curated Christmas compilation album entitled Yuletide Motel Volume One, with all proceeds going to the the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

lyrics

BREAKING UP THIS CHRISTMAS

I'm out of cigarettes and patience
And started talking in the past tense of my love for you
Walking through these streets in winter time

No longer taking bets my conscience
Departed leaving me to make sense of this love for you
Trying to forget about winter time

Our love
(Our love)
Was nothing but a waiting room
(Nothing but a fool)
And now I'm pushing with a broom to hide my track
(Push it all away)
And every church bell song that sings is out of tune
(Ding dong ding dong can't stay)

And now I'm stuck between a hard place
Stuck between a hard place
Stuck between a hard place and

Breaking up this Christmas
We should be breaking up this Christmas
Because breaking up this Christmas
Is my gift to you

I wrote twenty broken sentences
On sixteen different pages of no more love for you
Riding on this train in winter time

Past few years've become these moments
Left my heart stretched, beaten, broken by this love for you
Trying to forget about winter time

Our love
(Our love)
Was nothing but a waiting room
(Nothing but a fool)
And now I'm pushing with a broom to hide my track
(Push it all away)
And every church bell song that sings is out of tune
(Ding dong ding dong can't stay)

And now I'm stuck between a hard place
Stuck between a hard place
Stuck between a hard place and

Breaking up this Christmas
We should be breaking up this Christmas
Because breaking up this Christmas
Is my gift to you

Breaking up this Christmas
We should be breaking up this Christmas
Because breaking up this Christmas
Is my gift to you
