I had always been a little obsessed with the Nancy Sinatra version this song, but it wasn’t until I finally decided to cover it that I discovered that it wasn’t actually “her” song. That, in fact, Sonny Bono wrote it for Cher for her second album, “The Sonny Side of Cher”, which was released in the spring of 1966. Her version, in spite of Sonny’s lyric tale of heartbreak, is decidedly more upbeat. And while I do love Cher, for so many reasons (and also for simply, being Cher), I feel like Nancy’s version, for me, more truly captures the truth of the lyric story inside the song. Her version is stark and simple...a single, tremolo guitar and her voice. An arrangement that goes nowhere, but demands that you stay right where it is. It grabs you and holds you for the whole three minutes. And Nancy gives a master class in nuance.
Hopefully, I was able to capture a little of her magic while putting my own electronic spin on things.

BANG BANG
Music & lyrics - Sonny Bono
I was five and he was six
We rode on horses made of sticks
He wore black and I wore white
He would always win the fight
Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down.
Seasons came and changed the time
When I grew up, I called him mine
He would always laugh and say
Remember when we used to play?
Bang bang, I shot you down
Bang bang, you hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, I used to shoot you down.
Music played, and people sang
Just for me, the church bells rang.
Oh ~
Now he's gone, I don't know why
And 'til this day, sometimes I cry
He didn't even say goodbye
He didn't take the time to lie.
Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down...
